Treating Symptoms

Follow these steps for cuts

  1. Stop bleeding

  • Apply pressure directly on the cut
  1. Clean and Protect

  • With warm water and soap clean the affected area gently
  • To reduce the likelihood of infection apply an antibiotic—unless antibiotic causes rash
  • Place a sterile bandage over the affected area

Call a Doctor

  • If unable to clean cut or laceration
  • If the punctured wound is deep and person has not had a tetanus shot or booster in the last 10 years
  • If the cut is from a human or animal
  • If cut is over a joint and deep

Call 911

  • Cut is severely bleeding
  • After firm and steady pressure person is still bleeding after 10 minutes
  • Spurting blood
