Treating Symptoms

Slowly restore warmth
- Bring person indoors
- Never drench person in warm water – doing so may cause heart arrhythmia
- Any items used to bring temperature up wrap with cloth (do not expose directly on skin)
- Dry person – remove clothes and dry with towel
- Provide warm dry clothing and or wrap with blankets
- Do not warm hands or feet first – this may cause shock

Provide CPR if necessary
- If the person is unconscious provide CPR

Learn Adult CPR
Continue until EMS arrives

Provide warm fluids
- Do not provide alcohol or caffeine
- Give something warm to person if person is conscious

Keep warmth
- Maintain steady rising of temperature by keeping the person dry and wrapped – especially the persons head and neck
Call 911
Adults:
- Numb hands or feet
- Shallow breathing
- Shivering
- Unconsciousness
- Drowsiness or exhaustion
- Temperature below 95 F
- Slurring speech, memory loss or confusion
Infants:
- Red and cold skin
- Extreme low energy
