Treating Symptoms

Low body temperature
- Remove person from any direct light and heat – bring person to cool area
- Fan person if a cool room is not available
- Cool person with cold water – provide shower, bath, sponge bath and hose to help reduce heat

Provide re-hydration
- Re-hydrate person with beverages which are non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated as long is the person is conscious and alert

Make sure person rests
- If person is experiencing a mild head give over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- For the remainder of the day have person avoid physical activities
Call Doctor
Heat exhaustion can develop into a heat stroke
- Person is experiencing nausea or vomiting
- Symptoms worsen or last longer than an hour
Call 911
- Has high body temperature, is unconscious or disoriented
- High or low blood pressure with very high and weak pulse rate and rapid shallow breathing
- Hyperventilating with warm dry skin and elevated or lowered blood pressure
